Rugs 101: The Ultimate Guide for Vacation Rentals

Vacation rental interior design feeling a little…meh? Chances are, you need a rug.

Lots of hosts resist them, after all, they’re another thing to keep clean, but I’ll argue that rugs aren’t just a finishing touch — they’re the backbone of a well-designed short-term rental. They anchor your furniture, add warmth and style, protect your floors, and make your listing photos look instantly more polished. In other words: rugs work harder than almost any other piece of decor.

Let’s break down what you need to know about choosing the right rugs for your rental.

Why (Almost) Every Vacation Rental Needs Rugs

They tie everything together.
A rug defines the space, especially in open-concept layouts where living, dining, and kitchen areas blend together.

They add cozy factor.
Guests may not comment on your floors, but they
will notice the comfort underfoot. Rugs make spaces feel inviting and lived-in (in the best way).

They bring in color and pattern.
Think of rugs as giant art pieces for your floor — an easy way to inject personality without repainting or re-furnishing.

They protect your floors.
Guests don’t always baby your hardwood or laminate. Rugs add a protective buffer against scratches, scuffs, and spills.

Rug Sizing 101

Here’s the biggest rug mistake I see hosts make: going too small. A too-tiny rug makes even a nice space look skimpy. Use these rules instead.

Living room floor plan with an 8x10 rug, fitting under the coffee table and front legs of the sofa and chairs.
Living room layout with a 10x14 rug, large enough to sit under all furniture pieces including sofa, loveseat, and chairs.

Living Room Option 1
Rug just in front of the furniture (right up to the front legs). An 8×10 rug usually works for this.

Living Room Option 2
Front legs of the couch on the rug. It’s best of chairs and tables are fully on the rug so they aren’t wobbly. 10×14 is usually a good size for this.

Living room design with a 12x15 rug, extending well beyond all seating for a fully anchored look.
Living room with a layered rug setup, a smaller patterned rug centered over a larger neutral base rug.

Living Room Option 3
All of the furniture completely on the rug. An oversized rug, such as 12×15 is typical for this type of layout.

Note: Layering a patterned or colorful small rug over a large, inexpensive rug (such as jute) is a good way to use an interesting rug without breaking the bank.

Dining room floor plan with a rectangular table and six chairs, all placed on a rug that extends beyond the chairs for proper coverage.

Dining Room Rugs
Chairs should stay on the rug even when pulled out. Aim for at least 24″–30″ of rug beyond your table edges. An 8×10 usually works.

Bedroom layout with a queen bed and nightstands, showing a 6x8 rug placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed.

Full and Queen-Sized Beds
Leave 18–24″ of rug visible around the sides and foot of the bed. A 6×8 rug will work for this, though it can be a little skimpy for a queen.

Queen Beds
An 8×10 rug under a queen bed  allows enough room for a bench at the foot of the bed, or to have the rug extend under the nightstands.

King and Cal King Beds
A larger rug, like 9×12, works well for a king-sized bed. Leave 18″-24″ (or more) around the sides and bottom of the bed.

Bedroom layout with a king bed and nightstands, showing a 9x12 rug that extends beyond all sides and the foot of the bed for maximum coverage.

Durability: Rugs That Can Handle Guests

Not all rugs are created equal. In a vacation rental, you want pieces that look great and survive season after season.. These are the fibers I recommend. As with anything, quality varies so read the reviews.

  • Seagrass→ My go-to choice because they add beautiful texture, are durable and are water/stain resistant. They’re not soft, however.
  • Polypropylene / polyester → Budget-friendly, durable, and easy to clean. A top pick for dining rooms and high-traffic areas.
  • Wool → Durable, naturally stain-resistant, and respond well to cleaning However, wool rugs are expensive.
  • Nylon → More durable and easier to clean than polyester, but more commonly used in wall-to-wall carpeting than rugs.

Patterns and mid-tone colors are your friends — they hide stains and wear far better than solid white or light colors.

Don’t Forget Rug Pads

Rug pads are essential for vacation rentals, where keeping guests safe is a priority. In addition to keeping rugs from sliding, rug liners add cushioning, and protect your floors.

Important! Be sure to search for vinyl-safe, non-PVC rug pads if you have vinyl or LVP floors, because rubber and latex can discolor or leave a sticky residue on vinyl floors.

A good rug pad should keep rug corners from curling up, but in case they don’t, add rug corner grippers or carpet tape to keep guests from tripping over rugs.

Best pairings:

  • Hardwood → felt + rubber combo pad.
  • Tile → natural rubber pad for grip.
  • Vinyl flooring → felt, vinyl-safe grippers
  • Rugs on carpet → carpet lock rug pad or rug corner grippers.

Bonus: rug pads also dampen sound, which means fewer noisy footsteps echoing through your rental.

Washable Rugs – Yay or Nay?

More and more companies are offering washable rugs, and they can be great for homes with kids and pets. I generally don’t recommend them for vacation rentals, however, for the following reasons:

❌ Most practical washable rugs are on the small side because bigger rugs have to go to the laundromat. As discussed, bigger is usually better for rugs.

❌ They tend to be thin, so they’re not super durable.

❌ Two-part rugs, such as those sold by Ruggable, can get wrinkles after they’re washed and re-positioned, making them a trip hazard

Ready to Roll (Out Your Rug)?

The right rug doesn’t just look good — it changes how a space feels and functions. Rugs create zones, add personality, and protect your investment, all while making your Airbnb photos pop.
